What Bosses Should Do at Teambuilding Events

Bosses: Determine your role at teambuilding events.

You’re the boss, and you’re about to embark on a teambuilding event with your employees. All of a sudden, you think to yourself, “What is my role at an event like this? Do I even go and, if I do, what should I do or say?”

Not All Bosses (or Businesses) are The Same

We like to say the most important thing a boss can do in this situation is evaluate the culture in the workplace. Think about how you get involved with your team right now, and how your employees interact with one another.

If you’re the type of boss who regularly joins your team for weekday lunches and happy hours, then employees will likely expect you to attend the event. However, if your management style tends to be more hands-off, then perhaps your team can benefit from working together in a style they’re more accustomed to already.

Some who are in leadership positions question if their presence will keep their teams from opening up or letting down their guard at teambuilding activities. The truth is, it depends on how you already communicate and work with your team.

Consider the Goal of Your Teambuilding Event

Is your main objective to foster communication and trust between employees? Or do you want to establish better relationships between you and your teams? Your answers to these types of questions will tell you how involved you should be. If the event is more about building your team, then you may want to attend but take a back seat and let your employees use the opportunity for personal growth. On the other hand, if you want to use the moment to also create deeper bonds with your employees, then you may want to take a more central role in the process.

Go With an Open Mind

If you’re currently in a leadership position, especially one you’ve held for some time, then it may be difficult for you to challenge the status quo – or how things have always been done. It can also be tough for your employees, so remember that teambuilding events are meant to help all of you learn new and better ways to work together.

You may be introduced to a new perspective, a different approach, or a foreign way of thinking – and when you go with an open mind, you can accept that the way things have always been done may not be in the best interest of your people or the company, and find new ways to address it.

Whether you are a boss or are looking to become one in the future, keep in mind that teambuilding events are designed to help you accomplish your specific goals.
