Team Building Events: Should You Stay or Should You Go?

Team building events

When it comes to planning your team building events, you can either stay in your neck of the woods or head to a far-off destination. Ultimately, you have to determine your goals for the event, and then decide which travel agenda helps you meet them. Local or long-distance – we’re highlighting a few important considerations to help guide your decision.

When to Keep It Local

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of local team building events is that you’ll save money over planning a trip somewhere else. By doing a staycation-style event, you essentially eliminate the costs of travel (aside from local transportation), lodging, and additional meals and entertainment outside of the event. By keeping it local, you can satisfy a modest budget or spend more of it on your team building activities.

Something else you save: time. When you host your events nearby, your employees are off the clock for the morning or afternoon rather than a few days. Host your team building at night or on the weekend and you can avoid this altogether.

When to Get Away

If you happen to operate on a more liberal budget and schedule, then long-distance team building events may be the better option for you. For one, getting away gives you the opportunity to focus on building relationships between employees. You’re less likely to be distracted by work and personal life than you would be during a local event.

Second, your team can strengthen their bond outside of the event as well. By planning group activities beyond the actual team building sessions, you can extend the value of your event over a longer time period. The distance you travel may be farther, yet the overall experience can be that much greater.

When it comes down to choosing a location for your team building event, there are lots of decisions that need to be made. Whether you’re concerned with how much you want to spend, how much time you have or your big picture goals for the team. We can help you answer these questions, and take the stress of planning an event off your shoulders. Our team building professionals do the heavy lifting, so you can get back to doing what you do best.
